Melhem is currently an Industry Advisory Board Member at the University of New South Wales for the School of Materials Science and Engineering. Other Industry Advisory Board Members include Professor Sven Rogge the Dean of the Faculty of Science UNSW, Professor Paul Munroe the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Science UNSW, Professor Michael Ferry Head of the School of Materials Science & Engineering UNSW, and other members from the School of Materials Science UNSW, ANSTO, CSIRO, Boral, Cochlear, Perfect Engineering, Weir Minerals, Hatch, Pacific Aluminium, Brickworks.
The Advisory Board is an integral part of its management structure and provides a link with a key stakeholder group. Its purpose is, as follows:
- Contribute to the strategic direction for teaching and research, by reviewing and providing industry input to undergraduate course content, research directions, recruitment, and staffing and provide support for student recruitment including scholarships;
- Provide an external stakeholder voice with the Government in order to influence investment, and priorities with regard to facilities, equipment and research grant programs;
- Act as an industry network that the School can use to test ideas and seek advice from; and
- Meet with Engineers Australia’s Accreditation team regarding the School’s degree programs which require accreditation by Engineers Australia.
